Development and evaluation of poly-herbal digestive churna

Abstract

Ayurvedic medications are well known for their efficacy and safety in treating gastrointestinal issues. Using normal protocols, a churna prepared for its digestive qualities was created, and its safety and effectiveness were assessed using a variety of physical and analytical techniques. The churna formulation consists of a fine powder (sieve size 60) of Carica papaya leaves, Terminalia chebula, Nigella sativa seeds, and Bunium persicum in the proportions of 2:1:1:1. The formulation was subjected to various physical and chemical evaluations, including the determination of total ash, acid-insoluble ash, water-soluble extractive values, alcohol-soluble extractive values, and crude fiber content. Heavy metal analysis was done to make sure everyone was safe, especially for arsenic. Microbial load testing, specifically for the presence of Escherichia coli, was carried out to assess microbiological safety. The churna's digestive effectiveness was assessed by measuring its amylolytic and lipolytic activities and comparing them to Hajmola, a commercially available gastritis preparation. The churna's extractive and ash values were found to be within the allowed ranges. The arsenic level was determined to be 0.205 ppm, which is within safe limits. The formulation was found to be free of Escherichia coli and other bacteria, indicating its microbiological safety. The churna exhibited pronounced amylolytic activity and moderate lipolytic activity, which were found to be superior to Hajmola, indicating the churna’s effective digestive properties.
